After some initial investigations into plastic handheld models similar to a PDA or GPS unit, we decided that wearable technology should be the future of portable technology in the national parks. Playing off the idea that outdoors enthusiasts use gear, we decided to dub this technology Park Gear. Park Gear could eventually come in other forms, but rapid prototyping revealed that a digital armband was an appealing and easy way to use portable technology. Comfortable fabric bands with flexible touch screens and integrated buttons can be strapped over coats and other outdoor clothing. These lightweight bands are non-obtrusive and don’t become “just another thing to carry” while you visit the park.
